We have the return of MasterChef: United Tastes of America after a few weeks off. It continues this week with chefs from all four regions battling to win the MasterChef pin. We share everything that went down, from who won and who was eliminated. We also caught up with who was eliminated from this week’s show to get their thoughts on what went down.

We are down to 19 chefs competing for the $250,000 prize. Today, we have our first mystery box challenge, with it being Apples. Kyle got a huge advantage by having the MasterChef pin, as two regions will make savory dishes while the other two will make sweet dishes, and he gets to pick what each region cooks. Kyle picked savory for Midwest (his team) and West and sweet for the Northeast and South.

The judges roamed around and started looking at each dish up close and personal, even getting a little taste test. They do this to determine which dish they want to taste to see who won the competition, and even prepare to figure out who they might want to put in the bottom three.

The judges picked Jennifer as the winner of the competition and the MasterChef immunity pin. Funny enough, this saved Kendal, who made Churros with salt instead of sugar, and we saw the judges spit out his food.

The bottom three included Richie (Northeast), who is in the bottom for the second week in a row. He changed the name from cupcakes to home cakes, Joe pushes to ask why he changed the name, suggesting he changed it cause how they turned out (he did). Next, Charles (Midwest) and Joe rip him apart for using White Wine in his dish. The last chef on the chopping block, Lizzie (West), was criticized for overusing and overdoing the dish.

The person that the judges sent home was Richie, whose lying really rubbed Joe the wrong way, and I think that is what sent him home in the long run. Two weeks in a row at the bottom and a mess of a dish this week led to him heading home.

Hidden Remote sat down to talk to MasterChef contestant Richie to discuss her being eliminated from the show.

Hidden Remote: As you begin to cook, the judges come over to take a peek at what you are cooking, how much pressure does that add to an already stressful environment?

Richie: Oh, it’s insane. It’s insane because your mind is, you know, firing on all cylinders. You’re you want to cook, and you want to focus. You don’t want to mess any aspect of your dish up. But you also have to engage. You want to, you know, make sure that you seem interesting, for lack of a better word. So you’re trying to do all these things simultaneously, which is a lot. But you know, I feel like that’s what Master Chef is, is, you know, throwing as much as they can at you while you’re cooking and seeing how much you can handle.

Hidden Remote: Apples were in the mystery box, and you decided to make Spice Homecakes. Take us behind your thought process in choosing to cook that?

Richie: The apple definitely caught me off guard. You know, lifting a mystery box and having a pound of apple saw into your lap is not what you expect. I went in just thinking if I could make something that lets the apple shine and, you know, lend to the sensibilities of the apple but also wasn’t super simple or had been overdone. I didn’t want to do an apple pie, an apple turnover, or something like that. I wanted to do something different but still lean on those to make a spiced mini cake, do an apple compote, and put that on top with tarragon whipped cream on the side.

Because I was thinking the herbs, a nice sweet whipped cream with like mellow herbiness spices, you know, cinnamon, nutmeg, that kind of thing in the cake that already goes with the apple and Then just let the apple speak for itself, that sweetness, or, you know, brighten everything up and really be the star.

Hidden Remote: What was going through your head when the chefs started to try your dish?

Richie: It’s daunting. You always want to feel like you did a good job, and you always want to lead with pride. It’s weird to be validated in the space because then you feel like you’re good at something. So then you know, you always feel like I did my best, I did my best, I did my best. So it’s hard, you know, when they go to try your dish, and they’re not happy with it, you know it, it leaves you with that doubt and makes you wonder like, where did you go wrong? What could you have done to fix it?

Hidden Remote: What’s something you will take away from your time on MasterChef?

Richie: That you’re only as smart as you’re willing to learn, as weird as that sounds, like you go into something, and you feel like you studied so hard and you know so much, and you’ve prepared, and is it ever going to be enough? There’s always more to learn. There are always ways to be better and ways to improve. So I think that’s what I took away from it. It is just that every single day, just like every single episode, is an opportunity to improve yourself.
